lyengar Yoga Fundamentals is for anyone completely new to yoga, or to lyengar Yoga, who wants to learn the principles of skillful yoga practice. lyengar yoga is known for its emphasis on precision and alignment, for the use of props and modifications that make poses accessible to different bodies, abilities, and life stages, and for the rigorous requirements for certifying teachers.

Sarvangasana

Sarvangasana and her Children, the Iyengar Way
with Liz

Saturday, Feb 17:
11:30 -1:30 pm
$30

Salamba Sarvangasana (supported all limb/all body pose, aka Shoulder Stand) is the "Mother of asanas", a pose that "strives for the happiness and harmony of the human system". * A powerful inversion, Salamba Sarvangasana benefits the entire body. It nourishes and strengthens the endocrine system, soothes the nerves, and is a tonic to the heart. It has beneficial effects on the digestive system and all the abdominal organs and tones the spine. From Salamba Sarvangasana I are born a number of offspring or variations which together form a "Sarvangasa Cycle".

Despite its many virtues, Salamba Sarvangasana and its variations are often omitted from general yoga classes. The pose can seem daunting or dangerous to the uninitiated. Indeed, performed incorrectly, it can be injurious. Safe practice of this asana calls for an understanding of its structure and a careful use of props. In the Iyengar system, in which inversions are emphasized, props together with intelligent sequencing make Salamba Sarvangasana safe and accessible.

This workshop will introduce the fundamentals of Salamba Sarvangasana I and its variations and the benefits of each, instruct why and how to use props to perform and enhance the pose, and present related lore and philosophy. Students will learn restorative versions using a chair, as well as the classical version from the floor, and receive guidance in choosing one over the other.

Participants should have at least 6 months of yoga experience, know downward facing dog, be able to hold core standing poses for at least 20 seconds on a side, and not be on their menstrual cycle (when inversions are contraindicated). Modifications will be offered for hypertension.

*BKS Iyengar, Light on Yoga

Journey To Awaken Kirtan Experience!

Saturday, 7 pm. November 19th, December 17th, 2022
Suggested Donation $10.00

Every great spiritual tradition uses the repetition of a single word, a phrase or a series of phrases as one of its practices of awakening. In some cases, the practice is done in the quiet of our own mind, as in the Buddhist practice of Loving Kindness (Metta). In other cases, it is spoken or sung out loud, sometimes to the accompaniment of musical instruments.

Depending on the tradition, these practices are referred to as chanting, kirtan or mantram. Kirtan is a Sanskrit word for devotional singing or chanting. Songs, hymns, chants and mantras are put to music known in India as Bhajans. They come in a variety of forms and languages including Hindi, Bengali, Sanskrit, Pali and English. Many are ancient chants and mantras given to us by saints, sages, yogis and great masters from long, long ago and hard to date.

Journey To Awaken Kirtan honors the rays of the One light of spiritual wisdom, as expressed through chanting in the Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, Judaic and Indigenous peoples traditions.

When chanting...

it is best to focus inward, singing with devotion rather than emotion and to sit in silence afterwards with your awareness focused inwardly and upwardly, resting in the quiet stillness generated by the chant itself. Certainly the chant is important, but often it is the silence afterwards that moves us.

All are welcome!
No one turned away for lack of funds, No singing experience needed, Come and share in the joy of Kirtan!

          Saturday, March 18, 2:00-4:30 PM
          Sacramento Yoga Center

Have you ever wondered what the chakras are? Are you ready to experience the chakras rather than just reading or hearing about them?

This class will introduce you to the chakras and help you work with the subtle energies of the body, leaving you feeling calm and rejuvenated.

Beginning with a brief, easy-to-understand explanation of the chakras, we will move into a gentle series of postures designed to help you awaken and direct the energies of the inner spine. In addition, we'll use affirmations, mini-meditations, therapeutic grade essential oils and specific techniques to help develop an awareness of the chakras and the subtle energies of the inner spine. Learn to direct the newly awakened energy inwards and upwards to become more aware of your own inner peace and joy.

Come dressed comfortably with a fairly empty stomach. Bring a glass or stainless steel container to enjoy essential oil-infused water. Yoga mats available to borrow if needed. No experience necessary.

Comment from Breath Class Participant: Each persons experience is uniqe:)

"Buckle up and get ready for the ride of your life! This magical, mystical experience brought me into contact with my divine feminine. There were globes of energy surrounding my hands and I felt like I could heal the world. It enlightened my potential healing capabilities. Judy is a fantastic facilitator. I've been to several breathing classes in the past from rebirthing to yoga fire breath, but this far surpasses anything I've ever attended. If you think you might be interested, just say "Yes" and give in to yourself, like I did, and give it a try. I'm going back for more. You will be grateful." BG Sacramento

          Restorative Yoga for the Holidays

          Restorative Yoga for the Holidays

The holidays can be a tremendously busy time of year. Traveling, shopping, changes in diet and sleep patterns, combined with additional family commitments (who we love, but can still push our buttons!), can bring stress levels to an all-time high!

The antidote to stress is relaxation. Restorative yoga focuses on relaxation and renewal by using blankets, bolsters, straps, and other props to safely support the body in various postures, allowing the practitioner to move toward a state of balance.

Restorative yoga soothes your nervous system, helps quiet your mind and invites you to release deeply held tension - with ease and comfort in a supportive environment.

In these special 2-hour classes, students will be able to dive deeply into relaxation. Take time for yourself this holiday season: leave class refreshed, renewed and centered in your Self.

          No experience necessary.
